Medical Students, Faculty Stage Walkout at Anti-Abortion Address (Francisco Wong-Diaz, USA, 07/26/22 2:48 pm)

The formerly globally admired U of Michigan has reached a new low level in my opinion.

At a recent Medical School welcome ceremony, Dr. Kristin Collier, the keynote speaker and a declared anti-abortionist, encountered a walkout by medical students and faculty. In my graduate student days the U of M was a true academy where First Amendment freedoms were exercised in extremis. The Vietnam war was raging and pro and con sit-ins, forums, marches, and the like abounded everywhere on a daily basis. It was the best intellectual place to be at the time.

I also remember witnessing and then being caught in the midst of a student march through the main campus that was broken up by the police using tear gas and being forced to run and hide into the Law Quad to avoid the gas. Most memorably was to see a cop hit with his baton some idiot who remained walking on the street in front of the police line while the rest of the marchers moved to the sidewalk.  The "idiot" turned out to be my department's well-disliked quantitative political analyst working at the Survey Research Center. His respect and reputation suffered a lot by his poor judgment that day.

Back to the topic--the U of M was then a vibrant open expression university, so the recent UM medical student walkout indicts that new woke generation for its ideological tunnel vision and raises questions about their professional character. Open minded they are not.

JE comments: Francisco, to me it sounds like Michigan's half-century tradition of peaceful dissent is alive and well.  Wasn't it within the students' First Amendment rights to express their opposition to the Collier appearance?
