UK Home Secretary on Rising Anti-Semitism (Luciano Dondero, Italy, 01/19/15 7:16 am)

British Home Secretary Theresa May said on Sunday that Britain must step up its efforts to eradicate anti-Semitism across the country, Reuters report.

"I know that many Jewish people in this country are feeling vulnerable and fearful and you are saying you are anxious for your families, for your children and yourselves. I never thought I would see that day when members of the Jewish community in the United Kingdom would say they were fearful of remaining here in the United Kingdom, and that means that we must all redouble our efforts to wipe out anti-Semitism here in the United Kingdom," May said during a British Jewish gathering in London. And it appears that police officials have been working closely with Jewish organizations in Britain to step up security arrangements for British Jews after growing concerns over potential attacks.

PS: Maybe we should tell Ms May not to pay too much attention to YouGov polls?

JE comments: Luciano Dondero's PS is a response to WAISer John Heelan, who on January 15th pointed out that YouGov polls are not scientific.

Like Secretary May, I too never thought that anti-Semitism in the UK would become a problem in need of remedying.  Granted, here we are talking about "fear" and not actual events, but fear takes on a reality all its own.

The "British Jewish gathering" to which Luciano Dondero refers (19 January) was organised by the Board of Deputies of British Jews--the UK's senior and highly politically influential Jewish community body, roughly equivalent to the US "Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations." As such, all leading politicians will court this body prior to the 2015 election not only for donations but also to gain political preference amongst its members. (Theresa May might have provided a hostage to political fortune by allowing herself to be photographed holding a sign "Je Suis Juif.")

The 2015 Jewish General Election manifesto distributed by the Board can be read at http://www.bod.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/BoD-Manifesto.pdf

JE comments: A prediction: The biggest English language innovation of 2015 will be "Je suis X."  Already we've seen Charlie, Ahmed, and now Juif.  "Je suis X" will enter the permanent idiom phrasebook, alongside Saddam Hussein's "mother of all X" construction and the venerable "-gate" suffix to denote a scandal.

And to think that we've just crossed January's halfway point.  Here, courtesy of Reuters, is Ms May with the sign:
