Secrets to Wedded Bliss (Robert Whealey, USA, 07/24/14 3:21 pm)

Back on July 13th, John E asked how Lois and I maintain a happy marriage after 60 years. In our case the answer is complex.

1. We both had a BA in history in January 1954 when we met in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

2. I was working for an MA in History and she was working for the MA in the special field of "The History of Education."

3. I was financially self-supporting, working in summers for the annual tuition. She had one year work experience as a file clerk and a second year teaching on an Indian Reservation in Idaho.

4. She was then a loyal liberal Episcopalian member of the Canterbury House. I knew more about the text of the Bible as a historian who became an agnostic at age 19. Her strength was in reading novels, and she was a great help in proofreading my MA papers.

5. We were both liberal Democrats who disliked Senator Joseph McCarthy. I regarded myself as an expert on communism and hoped to become Secretary of State and become a member of the State Department.

6. I was drafted in the American Army in January 1955 and she taught 7th grade for four of five years.

7. Our study of diplomacy taught us over the years to continue discussing history, politics, religion, economics, philosophy and movies on a weekly basis until now.

Marriage will work if both partners learn the art of compromise.

JE comments: Bob Whealey's unnumbered point 8 is the crucial one!  Compromise, compromise, and more compromise.  But a shared politics and general Weltanschauung are also fundamentally important.  Remember, Dear Colleagues, that July 2014 is Lois and Bob Whealey Month on WAIS.  I send them both a warm greeting from Nowa Huta, Poland (just east of Krakow), where we have come to explore this socialist planned city.  Nowa Huta was conceived in 1949 and built during the same period that Bob and Lois were courting.  There's something uncanny about that.
