PostAthens General Strike, 26 September (Harry Papasotiriou, Greece, 09/27/12 1:39 pm)
JE asked me off-Forum about the General Strike in Athens held yesterday, 26 September. The rally was mainly peaceful; the level of violence was what we are used to here since well before the crisis--since the mid-seventies, to be precise. By Athenian standards, an uneventful day. But "no news is good news," I suppose, and the international media seem to have picked up images that are an annual routine in Athens and related them to the current crisis. People here seem rather resigned about the new round of wage and pension cuts that are coming. The more difficult test will be privatizations, since the public-sector unions are very powerful.
JE comments: My thanks to Harry Papasotiriou for keeping us in the loop. What is the timetable for the privatizations? I presume the public-sector employees will fight them tooth and nail.
