The Oklahoman ran a cartoon today (28 July) by John Darrow of the Columbia Daily Tribune. The cartoon depicts an aging, slightly overweight man peering in through a knothole in a huge stadium wall. He carries a briefcase labeled academics. The large stadium has a sign, College Athletics, with a smaller sign, "Game Today." I think the message is obvious, although I am not too sympathetic because the University of Missouri this year abandoned the Big 12 in favor of the Midwest's Big 10. Maybe, they are beginning to reap what they sowed.
JE comments: I assume the Columbia Daily Tribune hails from Columbia, Missouri, home to the state's flagship university. There are a lot of Columbias, although there's only one Colombia, where I'll sleep tonight.
It is strange that the Big Ten athletic conference, which presently represents 12 schools, is talking about expanding even more, to include Missouri, Syracuse, Rutgers, and Pitt. I think that adds up to a 16-member Big Ten, or 15 if you remove the über-sanctioned Penn State.
Meanwhile, the Big 12 has shrunk to...10 schools and counting?
No wonder college kids have such a hard time with math!
