re: US: Sarah Palin (Bienvenido Macario, Philippines/US) (John Eipper, USA, 08/30/08 6:09 am)

On John McCain's selection of Sarah Palin as his running mate,
Bienvenido Macario writes:

The way I look at it, McCain's VP choice, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, serves two
purposes. She's the first female VP candidate of the GOP and if
McCain wins, she'd be the first female VP. And as governor, an
executive position, a McCain-Palin ticket is a more complete set than
the Obama-Biden, who are both senators with none having any executive

Palin's selection as McCain's VP stole the thunder from Obama's
achievement of being the first African-American to be nominated
president of a major political party in the US.

If European politics is to be of any guide, the odds are against
Obama. Margaret Thatcher, the first female prime minister of England
and Angela Merkel, the first female Chancellor of Germany, both came
from the conservative or GOP version of their respective countries
political parties.

Hillary Rodham-Clinton started in politics working for a Republican,
Sen. Barry Goldwater, who ironically is from Arizona, the home state
of Sen. John McCain.

JE comments: No WAISer has yet mentioned that Palin's husband Todd
works in a "non-managerial" position at energy giant BP. After
Bush/Cheney and $4 gas, wouldn't it have been in McCain's interest to
distance himself, at least publicly, from Big Oil?
