re: WAIS: on Hate Speech (Istvan Simon, US) (John Eipper, USA, 02/14/07 4:49 pm)

Istvan Simon writes:

I too thank Linda Nyquist for her post against bigotry and hate speech in
WAIS. WAIS does not and should not censor speech, but that does not mean
that it needs to or should give a respectable platform to hate speech
either, particularly a veritable torrent of it, as was the case with
Christopher Jones.

Responding to John Heelan's question whether the ban should include hate
speech against any religion, race or nationality, in my opinion the answer
is yes.

There is another requirement of WAISers that I think WAIS ought to have.
That is that one can have any opinion whatsoever, but basic honesty in WAIS
posts must be a requirement. That includes basic honesty about one's
sources, and basic honesty in citing those sources accurately. Alas,
Christopher Jones was known to copy entire pages of sources without
attribution, and at other times he incorrectly identified his sources that
were in fact not his sources. This ought not to be tolerated in WAIS.
