Hitler, Franco, Fascism...and "Swine" (Paul Preston, -UK, 11/07/19 6:49 am)

Colonel Gerhard Engel, Hitler's Army Adjutant, reported to General Halder that the Fuhrer was dissatisfied with his meeting with Franco at Hendaye, ranting about "Jesuit swine" and "misplaced Spanish pride." I don't know who Hitler might have considered the "correct swine." Interestingly, Franco's father expressed no pride or pleasure in his son's eminence, ridiculing him as "an inept swine."

As for whether Franco was a fascist, we need a strict definition of fascism. In my view, the only "real" fascism was that of Mussolini and his followers Italian and foreign. Nazism shared some of the features of Italian fascism but was infinitely worse and therefore different. I don't therefore think that Franco was a fascist. He was much worse, an Africanista colonial officer who treated the Spanish proletariat with the same methods of blanket terror with which the population of Spanish Morocco was treated. Unlike Mussolini, he was deeply reactionary and, in terms of the terror employed against the Spanish people, more akin to Hitler.

JE comments:  Swine all around!  Much obliged, Sir Paul.  I've already lodged a complaint today about humanity's injustice to pigs.  I'm curious if there is any culture in the world in which they have a positive connotation.  Definitely not Spain, despite their love of pork-flesh:  "guarro" comes to mind, which is both a hog and a general term for filthiness.  Camilo José Cela's antihero Pascual Duarte excuses himself (con perdón) whenever he uses the word.

  • Churchill's "We Have Slaughtered the Wrong Pig" (Eugenio Battaglia, Italy 11/09/19 3:42 AM)
I greatly appreciated the post of Sir Paul Preston (7 November and I would like to add a couple of more or less related items:

    1) After the Hendaye meeting with Franco, Hitler said to Mussolini: "Rather than talking again with a guy like him (Franco), I would prefer to have three or four teeth removed."

    2) Italy's Rai News on 5 March 2013 reported that Churchill said when notified of the death of Hitler: "We have killed the wrong swine," implying that the right swine would have been Stalin.

JE comments:  The quote is probably apocryphal, but the usual wording is "we have slaughtered the wrong pig."  Things that Churchill may have or should have said are legion.  Or perhaps the pig quote is true?  Who can clarify?
