Post"Making America White Again?" Francisco Rodriguez-Jimenez in "Fair Observer" (Francisco Rodriguez Jimenez, Spain, 10/05/19 4:28 am)
Please find an updated version of my article about Guns in America, now published in English by Fair Observer:
Fair Observer was founded by my friend Atul Singh, who started this project from scratch ...and with almost no money. An impressive achievement!
JE comments: And a congratulations to you, Francisco! We posted the link to this essay in Spanish, back in August:
Francisco, I'd be very interested to know how your essay was received in Spain. And to bother you with another question, are you still in DC, or have you returned to Salamanca?
Spanish Perceptions of America's Love Affair with Guns
(Francisco Rodriguez Jimenez, Spain

John E asked about the reception in Spain of my essay, "Making America White Again."
Many Spanish friends wrote me regarding the article. This debate sparks a lot of attention and curiosity.
Yet only a few can grasp the ins and outs and how much complexity underlie an issue rooted in culture and history.
Barring the logical differences, it is perhaps similar, to a certain extent, to the debate about bullfighting in Spain. (Please do not misunderstand me. The gun question is worse, in my opinion, because many more people die annually. Someone might argue that many bulls die annually, too.)
I am now back in Spain, teaching in both universities, Extremadura and Salamanca.
JE comments: If you missed it yesterday, here once again is Francisco Rodríguez-Jiménez's essay:
I had never equated America's guns with Spain's bulls, but there are similarities. Tradition and "national identity" on the one hand, barbarity and senseless violence on the other. Here's an idea for a bumper sticker: "They'll take away my bulls when the pry them out of my cold, dead hands."
