PostLatest Developments in Italo-American Relations (Eugenio Battaglia, Italy, 10/03/19 3:54 am)
At this moment the most "beloved" foreign personality among the Italian people is the "great" President Trump.
First he openly expressed "hope that Conte will remain PM." His support for Giuseppe (Giuseppi according to Trump) Conte follows the age-old traditions of US meddling, and this act may even have pleased a minority of Italians. But now in order to punish Germany and France for their improper financing of Airbus (but the US is improperly financing its own planes), Trump is attacking Italy by placing high tariffs on cheese, prosciutto, etc. This will a disaster for Italian agriculture, especially after the stupid sanctions against Russia.
The worst mockery is that Italy had refused to participate in the Airbus consortium as per order of the Empire.
On top of this, Mr. Pompeo in visit to Rome pushed Italy into buying more military supplies from the US.
JE comments: Eugenio, Trump is "beloved" on these shores, too! Curiously, however, his campaign donations are on the increase since the Ukraine scandal and the impeachment investigation. Just when you thought the country couldn't get any more divided...
A curiosity: why was Italy "ordered" to stay away from Airbus? Was it considered an unreliable ally when the consortium was founded in 1970? Note that even Francoist Spain became a minority owner. And if the "Empire" was so all-powerful, why did it permit Airbus in the first place? In the early '70s, the US still had at least three commercial airplane manufacturers.
