PostGreenland is Not for Sale! (Holger Terp, Denmark, 08/20/19 3:51 am)
Danish politicians and media across the political spectrum are shaking their heads at Trump's comment about purchasing Greenland.
As Greenland's Home Rule chairman Kim Kielsen clearly stated: Greenland is not for sale. Moreover, Danish PM Mette Frederiksen said, "I cannot sell Greenland, because Greenland is not Danish. Greenland is Greenlandic!"
This is absolutely an "absurd discussion." Instead, Trump should offer to pay rent for the Thule base, which the US has so far used for free.
JE comments: The Thule base came out of a WWII-era agreement with the Danish ambassador to Washington, who wanted to prevent occupied Denmark's colonies from falling under German control. A 1951 treaty codified the agreement. The extreme northern position of the base was useful for Cold War (with emphasis on cold) reconnaissance flights over the Soviet Arctic.
Has anyone among WAISworld's military veterans been to Thule? The only place more remote is Antarctica.
