250 years ago today the greatest art thief of all times was born: Napoleon Bonaparte.
JE comments: Yes, on August 15th, 1769. Where does a quarter millennium go?
Napoleon is both idolized and reviled. No Google Doodle for the Little Emperor, but he still has one heck of a tomb. (Google today has honored a far less controversial visionary: Ignacio Anaya García, who grated cheese on corn chips and called them "Nachos.")
Is Napoleon the most ambivalently remembered figure in world history?

Not only is August 15th, 2019 the 250th birthday of Napoleon; it's the 50th anniversary of Woodstock.
JE comments: To think that Woodstock opened on Napoleon's 200th birthday. I've met a number of people of a certain age who were there amidst the mud and the love--but as with the French Resistance, I suspect the ranks of Woodstock attendees kept growing after the fact.
