Here are my latest reflections on the US, penned during my present stay in Washington, DC:
JE comments: Francisco Rodríguez-Jiménez writes in the noble tradition of Tocqueville, in order to grapple with the central paradoxes of America. Francisco probably thinks for most Europeans when he asks why the same nation of military adventurism and Walmart slaughter can also have such humanitarian traditions as Fulbright scholars and the Peace Corps. And how can the US simultaneously be both xenophobic and incomparably diverse?
The answers to the above are an enigmatic "yes." Yet if we pan out for a moment, couldn't we say that all nations are defined by their contradictions?
