Alice Whealey writes, in response to John Heelan's post of 25 November:

Re: María Rosa Menocal. She is a specialist in Spanish literature. She is
not a medieval historian, and her lack of training in the discipline of
critical history, which requires the extensive, critical use of primary
sources, an exercise she rarely undertakes, shows in that piece of
intellectual junk she has written that John Heelan refers to, namely *The
Ornament of the World*.
This puff piece is full of outright errors, and is marred by an overall extreme bias, and as mentioned a grossly inadequate engagement with the relevant primary sources. Menocal's *Ornament of the World* tells us much
more about the fantasies certain people want to project onto medieval Andalusia (namely the "myth of an enlighted, tolerant medieval Islamic world") than medieval Andalusia itself.

JE comments: As a literature specialist myself, I would be interested to
learn of the specific errors in Menocal's book, which has been received
quite enthusiastically by the public at large. I would have to see more
evidence before I can agree with Alice Whealey that it is a piece of
"intellectual junk."
