"Turkmenistan Inside the mad despot's realm" (The Economist,5/27/06) paints a sorry picture os the despotic rule of president Saparmurat Nizayov. He is an extraordinary case of megalomania That takes us back to our "Learning History" project. Presumably textbooks are full of praise of him. What did the textbooks under Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, Mao and Franco say about those leaders? They could be rated in terms of fawning obsequiousness.
